Actor Mohanlal has publicly apologized following criticism directed at L2: Empuraan due to its references to the Gujarat riots. In a statement on his Facebook page, he reassured his fans that "such subjects" would be eliminated from the film. He also expressed regret for any "distress caused" to his audience.

In his message, Mohanlal acknowledged that certain scenes have sparked political controversy. He stated in Malayalam, "I have learned that some of the political and social themes presented in the film Empuraan, the sequel to the Lucifer franchise, have caused significant distress to many of my dear ones. As an artist, it is my responsibility to ensure that none of my films promote hatred towards any political movement, ideology, or community."

Mohanlal takes ‘responsibility’ for film

He further emphasized in his apology that "the responsibility rests with all of us involved in the film." Consequently, the team behind Empuraan and I sincerely apologize for the distress caused to my loved ones, and recognizing that the responsibility is collective, we have collectively decided to remove such themes from the film," he added.

"I have spent my film career as one of you for the past four decades. Your love and trust are my greatest strengths. I believe there is no Mohanlal beyond that...With love, Mohanlal #L2E #Empuraan," he concluded.

What is CBFC's directive over L2: Empuraan row

In light of the controversy, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has instructed the film's team to implement 17 changes. According to a report by the Times of India, this directive followed intervention from the central government.

The CBFC office in Kerala reviewed the film and requested the necessary edits. If the revised version of L2: Empuraan is submitted by Monday, it is anticipated that the film will receive approval for screening in the coming days.

The film, helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, premiered in theaters on March 27. Serving as a sequel to Lucifer, L2: Empuraan is regarded as one of the most expensive productions in Malayalam cinema. The cast includes Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, Jerome Flynn, and Eriq Ebouaney.
