Thursday preview: A Minecraft Movie, The Amateur and more

A Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros/Legendary's A Minecraft Movie has surpassed the $200 million mark after generating $7.1 million on Thursday. It took Minecraft a week to achieve this milestone, whereas The Super Mario Bros. Movie reached the same amount in only five days last year, aided by its early Wednesday release and the Easter weekend. According to Deadline, the film is projected to experience a decline of approximately 60% this weekend, with an estimated revenue of around $65 million, allowing it to maintain the top position at the box office.

The King of Kings

In Angel Studios has announced that the preliminary earnings for the biblical animated film The King of Kings stand at $2 million, with screenings commencing at 11 am on Thursday. There is considerable excitement surrounding the film, as it is expected to surpass the presales of 20th Century Studios' The Amateur, a PG-13 spy thriller featuring Rami Malek, which has already achieved $14.6 million in presales. However, it remains to be seen whether this financial momentum will result in a successful weekend at the box office.

The Amateur

The Amateur reported $2 million in preview earnings; however, this amount also encompasses early screenings and the show's opening at 2 PM yesterday. These preview earnings are comparable to those of other recent films, such as Amazon MGM Studios/Miramax’s The Beekeeper, which garnered $2.4 million in previews and achieved $16.6 million during its opening weekend last year, and 20th Century’s The Creator, which recorded $1.6 million in previews and debuted with $14 million in 2023. The film is set to release today in 3,400 theaters, with a projected three-day total of $12 million.

Drop

Drop,  released in 2,600 theaters starting at 1:50 p.m. earned $750K in the previews. It increases to $1.4 million if screenings from Monday and Wednesday are also included. The three-day expectation for Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar is expected to be between $6M-$7M. Aimed at women 17-34, Drop was produced for $11 million, thanks in part to a strong tax credit from Ireland.

Warfare

A24’s Warfare has generated $1.6 million from its early access, with showtimes commencing at 4 p.m. across 2,670 venues. Directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, this R-rated film is projected to earn between $7 million and $9 million during the weekend. The production budget for the film was $20 million, excluding marketing and distribution expenses.
