Mimoh Chakraborty Reflects on Setback: "Vanished from the Spotlight After Flop Debut"

14 days ago | 5 Views

Mimoh Chakraborty experienced a challenging beginning to his acting career. In 2008, he made his debut in the film Jimmy, the son of Mithun Chakraborty and Yogeeta Bali. Unfortunately, the movie failed to perform well right from its opening day. In a recent interview, Mimoh, who is now known as Mahakshay, reflected on how deeply he was affected by that initial setback.

Mimoh on Bollywood debut

In a conversation with Digital Commentary, Mimoh shared how his debut was made possible through the support of Salman Khan and his family. "Salman bhai has been incredibly helpful. He has always been there for me, like an older brother. He has a deep affection for my father. Salman bhai recommended that we showcase Jimmy’s teaser alongside his film Partner in theaters, which was being released at that time. The title 'Jimmy' was suggested by Sohail Khan."

The trailer for Jimmy was featured with Salman's Partner, and the enthusiastic reception led Mimoh to believe that the film would be successful. However, he later realized the reality of the situation after the film's release.

The toll of Jimmy failing at the box office

I attended the theatre with my entire family to watch Partner. The film was sold out, marking Govinda's return to the screen. When the teaser was shown, there was an initial silence, but within five seconds, the audience erupted into applause. At that time, I was 24 and felt as though I had made it. As people reacted to my dance with whistles and cheers, I was elated, believing I had achieved stardom. However, by Friday afternoon, following the film's release, my phone ceased to ring, and cheques began to bounce—this all happened in an instant. In that moment, my entire world crumbled, and I felt as if my life had come to an end. I isolated myself at home for an entire year.

Directed by Raj N Sippy, Jimmy also featured Vivana Singh and Rahul Dev. The film earned a mere ₹1.86 crore at the box office. Although Mimoh appeared in a few subsequent films, they all underperformed, resulting in limited opportunities for him in the mid-2010s.

Mimoh's comeback to acting

In 2023, Mimoh returned to the screen in a supporting capacity in the film Jogira Sara Ra Ra, featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Earlier this year, he also took part in the Telugu movie Nenekkadunna. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, alongside notable actors such as Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jeet, Saswata Chatterjee, Ritwik Bhowmik, Chitrangada Singh, Aadil Zafar Khan, and Parambrata Chatterjee.
