Millie Bobby Brown : Breaking Free from Unrealistic Expectations
8 days ago | 5 Views
British actress Millie Bobby Brown expressed her strong disapproval of comments made about her and other women's looks, calling them "disgusting." Recently, the 21-year-old star of Stranger Things spoke out against what she described as "bullying" remarks and the media's tendency to scrutinize her appearance and choices, suggesting they want her to remain a child actor forever.
In a recent episode of the podcast Call Her Daddy, Brown mentioned how the press often targets her, especially as she ages and her accent shifts from living in the US.
She shared, “People often say things like, ‘Oh my God, she looks like she’s 40.’ But you met me when I was just 10, so I get it. Now that I’m 21, a decade has passed. I’ve grown up. My face has changed. What do you expect me to do about that?
“I wouldn’t want anyone else in the industry to experience this, but honestly, it doesn’t really bother me anymore. I wish I could say it affects me more. It used to, though. I remember trying to change myself to fit what others wanted.”
Right now, I’m in a spot where my accent shifts, my face changes, and I love wearing makeup. That’s just who I am, and no one’s going to dictate how I should express my femininity. She also mentioned, “It’s never okay when negative things come out about me or other women and young girls in the industry. It’s disgusting, and I can’t believe it still happens.”
“If I could make a wish, it would be that no one has to deal with that level of scrutiny because it really alters who you are and how you see the world,” Brown continued. “You start to notice the bad in everyone instead of the good. You’re always questioning, ‘What are your intentions? What are you going to say about me?’ I think the media needs a refresher on basic manners. They should go back to school to learn how to treat people with kindness and remember that we’re all evolving and making mistakes. The standards and stigmas against girls, especially in Hollywood, are just absurd.”
Earlier this month, comedian Matt Lucas reached out to Brown to apologize for using the phrase “no but yeah but” – a line from his character Vicky Pollard in Little Britain – alongside her photos, referencing her earrings. He shared on social media, “I thought you looked amazing, and I was horrified when the press claimed I ‘slammed’ you. That’s not how I roll, and I think you’re fantastic. I wouldn’t have posted it if I thought it would upset you, but I see now that it did, and I’m really sorry.”
This month on Instagram, Brown shared some headlines from various articles, including mentions of Lucas’s comments on X. She pointed out that these remarks were “amplifying an insult instead of questioning why an adult man is making fun of a young woman’s looks.”
She added, “Disillusioned people struggle to accept a girl growing into a woman on her own terms, not theirs. I won’t apologize for maturing. I won’t shrink myself to meet the unrealistic standards of those who can’t accept a girl becoming a woman.” Brown, who tied the knot with Jake Bongiovi, son of rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, last year, is currently promoting her new Netflix film The Electric State, where she stars alongside Chris Pratt. She has also just wrapped up filming the fifth season of the popular Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things, where she has portrayed the superpowered teen Eleven since 2016, with the final season set to release this year. Following her breakout role, Brown took on the lead as Enola Holmes, Sherlock Holmes’s sister, in the 2020 Netflix film and its sequel released two years later.
