Meryl Streep is reportedly under consideration for the Netflix reboot of ‘The Chronicles of Narnia.’ According to an exclusive report by Matthew W of Nexus Point News on Monday, the 75-year-old actress has been offered the role of Aslan, who will be portrayed as female in this adaptation. As of now, neither the production team nor Streep has commented on this news.
Aslan is a pivotal character in C.S. Lewis's series, appearing throughout all seven books. The character, known as the ‘Great Lion,’ was previously voiced by Liam Neeson in the live-action Narnia film trilogy produced by Walden Media in the 2000s.
In response to the news, one user on social media expressed, “I love Meryl Streep, but why are they changing Aslan's gender?” Another user exclaimed on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, “WHOA! Meryl Streep is set to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig's 'THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA'?!” However, it is important to note that nothing has been officially confirmed at this time.
Critics have expressed their discontent regarding the decision to portray Aslan as a female lion, arguing that this alteration significantly distorts the original narrative, as Aslan is intended to symbolize Jesus, the Lion of Judah. One individual voiced their frustration on Twitter, stating, "I despise Hollywood. They are going to insert a female character into the film, which will ultimately diminish its quality."
The upcoming Netflix adaptation of Narnia will be helmed by Greta Gerwig, who shared her apprehensions about the project. "I feel a sense of dread because I hold Narnia in such high regard; it was a beloved part of my childhood. As an adult, I recognize C.S. Lewis as a profound thinker and writer.
