It's pretty much a given that Kapil Sharma is the most famous comedian in India. His shows, live performances, and movie roles have made him a household name nationwide. You might think he’d also be the wealthiest, but there's actually one 'king of comedy' who reigns supreme, sitting well above Kapil and even a lot of Bollywood celebrities.

The wealthiest comedian in India

Veteran Telugu actor Brahmanandam, known in Tollywood as the 'King of comedy', is reportedly the richest comedian in India. Across a career that has seen him appear in over a thousand films (a world record), Brahmandandam has amassed a wealth of $60 million, according to DNA and MoneyControl. This translates to a net worth of over ₹500 crore, making the actor richer than not just all the comedians of India, but even A-list actors such as Ranbir Kapoor ( ₹350 crore), Prabhas ( ₹300 crore), and even Rajinikanth ( ₹400 crore).

India's richest comedian, Brahmanandam, also holds the record for appearing in over a thousand films.

No other well-known comedian in India can quite match Brahmanandam's status. Kapil Sharma is said to have a net worth of ₹300 crore, but none of the other comedians in the country even reach ₹100 crore.

The story of how Brahmanandam earned his fortune

Brahmanandam started his career as a lecturer at an AP college before diving into the entertainment world in the 80s as a theater performer, showcasing his impressive mimicry talents. He made his television debut in 1985 and hit the big screen in 1987. His role in Aha Naa Pellanta! marked a turning point, leading to a flood of offers. By the 90s, he was a staple in nearly every other Telugu film, with filmmakers considering him a must-have. This high demand allowed him to raise his fees, earning more than even the biggest stars each year. In 2012, he received recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most screen credits of any living actor. By 2020, he surpassed Prem Nazir to hold the record for the most credits of any actor in history. Even in his 60s, Brahmanandam remains active in acting; while he may not be as frequently seen, he still commands a high fee for his roles.
