Matty Healy's protracted conflict with Azealia Banks took an unexpected turn this week, as the frontman of The 1975 issued a threat to "slap" the rapper following her derogatory remarks about his bandmate's fiancée, Charli XCX. What initially started as a series of exchanges regarding some provocative comments on X escalated dramatically, with Healy's reaction ultimately crossing a boundary he would come to regret.

After delivering a message that left even his fanbase astonished, Healy promptly issued an apology, acknowledging that his remarks were inappropriate. However, Banks remained unyielding, casting aspersions on the singer's contentious history and even alluding to the possibility of legal repercussions.

Azealia, it appears that you may have a blind spot regarding your critiques. The women you target are not only culturally significant and attractive but also divisive and generally regarded as kind individuals, as noted by Taylor Swift’s former partner on his X account following Banks' tweet about the 360 artist. He expressed, "This seems to stem from jealousy, as you possess considerable talent, yet other aspects of your persona seem lacking. Just focus on your rapping." 

This comment was made in reaction to the Luxury rapper's observation about Charli XCX's looks, where she stated, "Charli used to be soooo pretty. Ugh," in reference to a clip from Charli’s "Break the Rules" music video. She further remarked, "Boaaa, I swear those Weho gays have the girls questioning themselves while they are all scraping k off a cookie sheet, eating cold bossanova, and sharing panties. Tuh."

The vocalist of Speed Drive, who is engaged to George Daniel, a member of Healy's band, maintains a positive rapport with Healy. While numerous social media users came to Charli XCX's defense in response to Banks' remarks, with one individual stating, “Yes, she was attractive before, but she is even more stunning now,” the situation escalated when Banks insulted Healy's fiancée, Gabbriette Bechtel, referring to her as “Frankenstein” and suggesting, “You both look like you share needles.”

In a moment of frustration, the Somebody Else singer expressed, “If you speak to me in that manner, I will not merely give you a disapproving look at an awards event; I will strike you so forcefully that I will earn a Guinness World Record for the farthest a rat, whom some might call a wig, has ever been thrown.”

Following a surprising tweet from a member of The 1975, Banks utilized X to pose a question to her followers: “What kind of individual goes online and self-incriminates in such a manner? Laughing my ass off, a man could physically assault Gabi, and you would remain inactive. You are preoccupied with seeking attention by kissing men on stage.”

The singer, upon recognizing his error, promptly issued an apology, stating that there is no justification for being unkind to his friends and associates. He expressed, “I cannot claim that I would physically harm a woman; that is utterly unreasonable, and I apologize. It is unacceptable for you to continue being so unkind towards my friends and my partner; it is genuinely distressing and makes me quite defensive.” He further noted, “I will delete that tweet, as it was inappropriate, regardless of my anger at the time.”

Azealia Banks, however, was not inclined to accept Matty Healy’s apology. Instead, she referenced his controversial history, including a past admission of consuming degrading material featuring women of color. She highlighted the inconsistency in his stance, questioning how he could express offense at her remarks while maintaining such views. Banks also suggested the possibility of legal action, expressing her frustration at being targeted for voicing her opinions.

The discord between Banks and Healy dates back to May 2023, when Banks publicly cautioned Taylor Swift against entering a relationship with the singer. She asserted that he did not merit Swift’s esteemed reputation, warning, “This individual is likely to bring you trouble. He does not match the caliber of the powerful image you have worked so diligently to establish.”
