The actor revealed during an interview with CNN's African Voices Changemakers, "I continue to face challenges in making a living. I certainly feel that I am undercompensated."
Hounsou's ascent in Hollywood was marked by a pivotal role in Amistad, which garnered him significant critical recognition. Nevertheless, he did not receive an Oscar nomination for this performance, an omission that remains a source of disappointment for him.
"I received a Golden Globe nomination, yet the Oscars overlooked me, suggesting they perceived me as someone who had just arrived from the streets," Hounsou reflected. "Even though I delivered a successful performance in that film, they did not regard me as an actor deserving of their respect. The notion of diversity in this industry still has considerable progress to make."
