Marco Star Unni Mukundan Opposes Film Strike: ‘Not in Favor of Hurting the Industry’

Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan, who has both acted in and co-produced the successful film Marco, recently addressed the upcoming producers' strike scheduled for June 1. This strike aims to compel actors to reduce their fees and urges the government to implement measures to mitigate financial losses within the industry.
During a press conference for his film Get Set Baby, Mukundan expressed his belief that strikes are an ineffective means of resolving issues in any sector. He stated, "We need to seek solutions when faced with challenges. I cannot endorse actions that would jeopardize the industry. I support my parents through this profession, and if it were to end, what would become of me?"

The actor emphasized that implementing such drastic measures disrupts the industry's operations and adversely impacts numerous individuals involved in film production. He remarked, “While strikes may have once served as a viable solution, it is now unjust to halt the work of everyone due to the grievances of a specific group. The creation of a film sustains the livelihoods of many. Beyond the actors, there are daily-wage workers who depend on this industry for their income.”
Unni, noting the profitability of the film Marco for himself and his co-producers, asserted that producers must recognize the inherent risks associated with filmmaking. “As both a producer and an actor, I invest in a concept. The film industry is inherently risky, and if anyone convinces a producer that they will recover their investment as guaranteed profit, that constitutes fraud. This reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the industry,” Unni stated.

Unni Mukundan backs decision to release Jai Ganesh with Aavesham
Another film that Unni participated in last year, titled Jai Ganesh, did not achieve the same success as Marco. Released during Vishu 2024, it faced competition from Varshangalkku Shesham and Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham, the latter of which became a major hit.
Despite this, the star of Marco supported the decision to release Jai Ganesh. “Many people questioned whether it was wise to launch our film alongside Aavesham, which was highly anticipated by the youth audience. However, I chose to support Jai Ganesh because of its message of inclusiveness. While there is a call to include specially-abled individuals, when a film is made about such a person, there is pressure to postpone its release for a larger production. I believe our vision was significant, which is why we proceeded with the release,” he stated. “The size of a film is not determined by the budget but rather by the quality of the content. In my view, a film centered on a specially-abled individual achieving something remarkable qualifies as a ‘mass’ film, and that was my perspective on Jai Ganesh.”
