Mansoor Khan Believes Junaid Khan Was the Right Choice for Laal Singh Chaddha

Bollywood director Mansoor Khan, renowned for his iconic films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, was instrumental in providing his cousin Aamir Khan with his first major success. In a recent interview, Mansoor expressed the opinion that Aamir's son, Junaid Khan, would have been a more suitable choice for the role in Laal Singh Chaddha. He also mentioned that he would not have cast Kareena Kapoor in the film.

Aamir's 2022 release, Laal Singh Chaddha, which is an official adaptation of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, performed poorly at the box office. The superstar took responsibility for its lackluster reception, admitting that he struggled to portray the younger version of his character effectively. In his discussion with Screen, Mansoor pointed out that Aamir had exaggerated certain mannerisms that were unnecessary for the role.

‘You’ve overdone the mannerisms’

Mansoor remarked, “I would say he misrepresented the elder performance completely (laughs). Did he say younger? It seems he hasn’t grasped it yet. I watched the first screening and told Aamir, 'What are you doing!' Aamir has a habit of inviting close friends for a preview and then soliciting our feedback. Unfortunately, I am often the first he calls. I told him, ‘You’ve overdone the mannerisms. They are not needed. Sadly, it resembles his mannerisms in PK.’ Aamir has acknowledged this.”

He noted that while many filmmakers celebrate their successes with parties after a film's release, Aamir Khan opted to host one to acknowledge its failure, taking full accountability for it. Mansoor felt that the screenplay was a faithful adaptation of Forrest Gump but believed that a specific element detracted from the film's overall effectiveness. He inquired whether the director, Advait Chandan, had suggested the mannerisms Aamir displayed. He stated that had he been in the director's position, he would have prohibited such choices. Aamir clarified that these mannerisms were not Advait's suggestion. According to Mansoor, this particular aspect diminished the film's essence, resulting in a disjointed feel to each scene.

It has been reported that Junaid, the son of the actor, is being considered for a role in the film. In an interview with Screen, the director revealed that after viewing Junaid's screen test, he was convinced that the young actor's inherent innocence would resonate with audiences.

Junaid's screen test was brilliant

Junaid's screen test was exceptional. "Aamir suggested that I watch Junaid's screen test, and I was impressed by his performance. Although he is only 28, he possesses a unique innocence that even the most skilled actors struggle to portray. If you can connect with someone emotionally, it transcends acting ability. When I was asked for my opinion, I firmly stated that Junaid should be cast in the film. This surprised the producers at Sony, as well as the director. I also decided against casting Kareena (Kapoor). What is this fear of poor box office performance? That’s nonsense!" Mansoor remarked.
