Mammootty's Bold Choice: Keeping Dominic Real Over Swag

Gautham Vasudev Menon’s recent film, Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, has garnered attention for its portrayal of Mammootty, who is depicted without the typical grandeur associated with a Malayalam megastar. In a recent press conference, Mammootty elaborated on his character, Dominic, and discussed his decision to decline Menon’s suggestion to infuse the role with additional charisma.
Mammootty in Dominic and the Ladies' Purse
In Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, Mammootty portrays a former police officer turned detective who embarks on what appears to be a straightforward case, only to discover deeper complexities. During a press event following the film's release on January 23, 2025, Mammootty clarified that Dominic does not conform to the conventional ‘hero’ archetype.

He described Dominic as an individual who has been dismissed from the police force and grapples with personal challenges. “Additionally, he is a diabetic,” Mammootty remarked with a light-hearted tone.
Mammootty emphasized, “It is not necessary for all heroes to engage in battles against numerous adversaries in every film. Not every character is a fighter.” He acknowledged that he has portrayed such roles in the past, but asserted that Dominic does not fit the mold of a typical hero.
“This character is more grounded and realistic. Sir (GVM) suggested we could add more flair, but I declined, ensuring that Dominic remains an ordinary individual who acts in ways that regular people would,” Mammootty explained.
He expressed his satisfaction with the audience's acceptance of such a character within a thriller context.
It is noteworthy that Mammootty has not shied away from experimenting with diverse appearances and portraying characters with complex, darker traits, as demonstrated in the 2024 film Bramayugam, where he took on the role of an aging patriarch.
Dominic and Ladies’ Purse plot and cast
The film, featuring Mammootty in the lead role, includes Gokul Suresh in a significant part, alongside Viji Venkatesh, Lena, Siddique, and Vijay Babu. Additionally, Sushmitha Bhatt and Meenakshi Unnikrishnan contribute to the ensemble cast. Produced by Mammootty Kampany, this project represents Gautham Vasudev Menon’s inaugural directorial venture in Malayalam cinema.
Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse is currently being screened in theaters across Kerala.
