11 days ago | 5 Views
Actor Malavika Mohanan addressed the prevalent emphasis on showcasing the navels of female performers in South Indian cinema. In a conversation with Hauterrfly, Malavika acknowledged that the attention given to the navels of actresses is indeed a significant aspect in the South. She noted that there exists a belief that female actors are more appealing when they possess fuller figures.
What Malavika said
During the interview, when Malavika was questioned about this topic, she remarked, "I was quite confused in the past as well, having been raised in Mumbai. The intense focus on navels was entirely unfamiliar to me. I would often come across images of actresses on social media that highlighted their bodies. The fixation on navels is indeed a significant reality."
‘I got called things like skin on bones’
She further elaborated on the severe online harassment she faced for being too thin when she first entered the acting industry. "At the age of 21, during my debut film, I was subjected to intense trolling for my slim figure. My body underwent changes in my mid-20s, becoming a bit curvier. The trolling was relentless and quite harsh, which had a significant impact on me. I was labeled with terms like 'skin and bones' and advised to gain weight—these were among the more polite comments. There were also many derogatory remarks. When individuals criticize someone's body during their formative years, it constitutes bullying and can have detrimental effects," she expressed.
Malavika is set to appear alongside Prabhas in the Telugu film The Raja Saab and with Karthi in the Tamil film Sardar 2, in addition to her role in the Malayalam film Hridayapoorvam.
