For almost thirty years, she has been one of India's most beloved and legendary dancers, but with Hip Hop India 2, Malaika Arora is diving into a fresh genre. As a judge on the Amazon MX Player show, she's stepping into the hip-hop scene. In a chat with HT, the actress shares her experiences in this new realm, what she's learned, and how she stays authentic in the reality TV landscape.

Malaika Arora shares that she's exploring new styles of dance

Malaika shares that she's gained a lot from her experience on the show. "Throughout this journey, I'm excited to explore various dance styles that I haven't really incorporated into my repertoire but am eager to learn. That truly makes me happy. Remo is not just guiding the contestants; he's also mentoring me as I go through this process," she explains.

Famous for her Bollywood dance moves, Malaika expresses her desire to infuse more swag into her already graceful and stylish performances. "When you connect with a specific style, it becomes part of who you are. I want to shift that and completely transform my approach. I’m aiming to bring that kind of swag into my dancing," Malaika adds.

Malaika weighs in on whether reality shows are scripted

The actor has served as a judge or mentor on various reality shows over the years and has often encountered the criticism that these shows are scripted. She explains, "To someone not in the know, it might look scripted. At times, it does feel that way. We get frustrated when things get too dramatic. We prefer a more natural vibe. With Hip Hop 2, there’s no excessive crying, so we’ve kept the drama to a minimum."

However, Malaika acknowledges that some contestants try to inject drama, thinking it will enhance their chances on reality TV. "Absolutely, you can notice that. It’s clear when someone is overdoing it because they’ve seen enough reality shows to know how things typically unfold, but we call them out on it. We tell them to cut it out, no drama here. This pretense won’t fly. Let’s concentrate on the dance, not the theatrics. Let the dance shine," she adds.

Hip Hop India season 2 is now available for streaming on Amazon MX Player.
