Director Reema Kagti is known for her meticulous nature, a fact confirmed by her actors. In an engaging conversation with HT, the cast and crew of her forthcoming film, Superboys of Malegaon, shared insights into her keen attention to detail during production, while Reema elaborated on the film's development process.

On her attention to detail

Vineet Kumar Singh, one of the prominent actors in the film, discussed Reema's keen attention to detail, noting her ability to identify even the slightest discrepancy in props within a scene. Reema herself recounted a specific incident: "During our rehearsal, we had keema samosas as a prop, but we hadn't set out the food yet. When it came time for the first take, I noticed a plate of Punjabi samosas had been placed in the frame. I immediately exclaimed, 'These are Punjabi samosas, not keema samosas.' It was a night shoot, so the art department and several assistant directors had to rush to the kitchen to prepare keema samosas," she explained, emphasizing, "It is essential to get it right."

On Superboys of Malegaon

Superboys of Malegaon is inspired by the life of Nasir Shaikh and other amateur filmmakers from Malegaon, drawing partial inspiration from the documentary Supermen of Malagaon. Regarding the artistic liberties and fictional elements of the narrative, Reema stated, "We haven't fabricated anything. While it may not be entirely historically precise, or we might have merged a couple of characters, we have taken such liberties, but everything is rooted in his life."

There has been considerable discussion surrounding the theatrical release of Superboys of Malegaon in a post-COVID landscape that seems to favor only major films for success. Reema herself does not subscribe to these categorizations. "I find that perspective quite reductive," she remarked, adding, "Ultimately, it is about producing quality work. Yes, there is a commercial dimension to consider. However, filmmaking is an art form. When you impose such labels, it becomes overly simplistic. Any film, whether a major blockbuster or an independent project, if it garners positive word of mouth, tends to perform well. I believe that is crucial."

The cast of Superboys includes Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, Shashank Arora, Anuj Singh Duhan, and Riddhi Kumar. The film is produced by Zoya Akhtar, Farhan Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Ritesh Sidhwani, and it premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Its global theatrical release is scheduled for February 28.
