In 1999, Sooraj Barjatya's movie Hum Saath Saath Hain became a huge success at the box office. It starred big names like Salman Khan, Sonali Bendre, Mohnish Bahl, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Alok Nath, and Tabu in prominent roles. Even now, it's one of the most cherished and frequently watched films. The plot struck a chord with viewers as it focused on the dynamics of a joint family. In the film, Tabu portrayed Salman's bhabhi (brother's wife). But here's a fun fact: Madhuri Dixit was originally supposed to take on that role! Sooraj Barjatya recently shared the reasons behind the casting switch. Keep reading to find out more....

What led to Tabu taking Madhuri Dixit's place in Hum Saath Saath Hain?

Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan made quite the pair on screen, especially in Barjatya's classic, Hum Aapke Hain Koun. The 1994 movie also starred Renuka Shahane and Mohnish Bahl. Fast forward to 1999, when Madhuri showed interest in joining the cast of Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya wasn't exactly thrilled about her taking on the role of Salman's sister-in-law. In a recent chat with Radio Nasha, the talented director shared that Madhuri reached out to him to express her desire to be part of the film.

Sooraj Barjatya shared, "I told Madhuri, ‘Look, I’m making a film that’s pretty male-centric. If I cast you with Salman, it’ll be a minor role, but if I pair you with Mohnish Bahl, you’ll end up being Salman’s bhabhi.’ She’s such a wonderful person; she replied, ‘It doesn’t matter, I just love working with you.’ But I had to be honest and said I wouldn’t feel right about it."

Since Madhuri and Salman had already played lovers in his last movie, he didn’t want her to take on the role of his sister-in-law. He mentioned that casting was a bit challenging because he needed someone who didn’t have a prior connection with Salman. Barjatya added, "The whole issue was that Salman is a big star, so I needed to find someone who could be seen as a bhabhi. That’s why we chose Tabu; she came in without any preconceived image."

Sonali Bendre also starred with Salman, and their chemistry was loved by fans.
