Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is celebrated for his impactful dramas and films focused on women, such as Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion, Corporate, and Heroine. Many of his critically acclaimed works have also achieved significant box-office success.

One standout film is Chandni Bar (2001), which marked Bhandarkar's successful debut in Bollywood. Starring Tabu, the movie tells the story of a bar dancer and delves into the harsh realities of Mumbai's underworld, sex work, and gun violence. Interestingly, when the film premiered, Madhur was at home sleeping. It was director Mahesh Bhatt who encouraged him to experience the audience's reactions firsthand by visiting theaters and embracing the moment of his first hit.

You're a crazy, silly dude. Your movie is a huge hit!

On the Gamechanger podcast, Madhur shared an incident with Komal Nahata, recalling, “I was napping on the carpet in my 1BHK, just under a fan since I didn’t have an AC at the time. Around 2 PM, I got a call from Mahesh Bhatt saab. I had met him a couple of times before. He asked, ‘Madhur, where are you?’ I was still groggy and replied that I was at home. He then let loose with some harsh words, saying, ‘You’re a crazy fool. Your film is a massive hit, and you’re just sleeping? Go check out the crowds outside the theaters. Opportunities like this don’t come around often.’ That really fired me up. I apologized and dashed out like I was responding to an emergency,” Madhur recounted.

He went on to describe how he first visited Gaiety Galaxy and Star City cinemas, both packed with audiences. Since he was relatively unknown at the time, he felt comfortable asking people if they enjoyed the film. It was a relief to hear that the audience was responding well. He then called Mahesh to share the good news. "I really needed that motivation. He was spot on. People don’t get to see such a big hit every day,” Madhur added.

Madhur Bhandarkar's newest ventures

Madhur Bhandarkar's most recent film as a director was the sports comedy Babli Bouncer, featuring Tamannaah Bhatia, which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in 2022.
