Madhur Bhandarkar on female-led movies
Madhur Bhandarkar reflected on his past experiences, noting that many believed only he had the capability to produce a film within a specific budget, a feat they felt they could not achieve. The filmmaker remarked on the hesitance exhibited by others in this regard.
Madhur reflected on the willingness of actresses such as Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Priyanka Chopra to lower their fees for his projects, noting that higher salaries could exacerbate budget limitations. The director encouraged his peers in the industry to explore women-centric storytelling. He remarked that while many may offer unsolicited advice, it is essential for filmmakers to follow their own instincts. Madhur also shared that his film, Chandni Bar, faced harsh criticism, with reviewers labeling it as bleak and depressing.
During the Fashion event, attendees expressed that viewing a fashion show was preferable to watching this film. Such opinions should not deter us. Currently, Laapataa Ladies is receiving international attention due to its compelling content, he remarked. Bhandarkar noted that his film Chandni Bar faced competition from notable movies such as Gadar and Lagaan, yet it still achieved nominations at all major award ceremonies.
