As biopics surged in popularity and studios eagerly sought to explore this genre, one of the most captivating figures chosen for not just one, but two projects in India was Ma Anand Sheela. A key associate of Osho, Sheela has become a subject of extensive discussion and controversy in recent years, leaving a significant impact on those who have learned about her life.

Consequently, as her narrative began to attract mainstream interest, two biopics were announced—one directed by Shakun Batra featuring Alia Bhatt, and the other starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas. However, neither of these films came to fruition, and Sheela has recently shared insights into the reasons behind their failure to progress.

Why the Alia Bhatt Project Didn't Take Off

A few years back, it was announced that Shakun Batra, known for directing the 2021 documentary Searching For Sheela, intended to create a feature film centered on the life of Ma Anand Sheela, with Alia Bhatt cast in the leading role. Unfortunately, the film did not progress beyond the initial planning phase.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Ma Anand Sheela disclosed that Batra's team had been in communication with her and that work had commenced. However, the project was ultimately abandoned due to insufficient funding, which impeded its advancement and resulted in its cancellation.

Interestingly, Sheela also shared that after watching a few of Alia Bhatt's scenes, she was convinced the actress was a perfect match to portray her younger self, citing a strong physical resemblance.

Ma Anand Sheela on Priyanka Chopra Jonas' Project

Sheela also discussed the biopic in which Priyanka Chopra Jonas was slated to portray her. The film, titled Sheela, was produced by Amazon Studios, directed by Barry Levinson, and written by Nick Yarborough.

However, Sheela conveyed her disappointment regarding the management of the project, stating that Priyanka had not contacted her to obtain her consent prior to the public announcement of the film. This situation understandably caused her distress at the time.

She remarked, “No, she (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) declared her intention to take on the role of Sheela without asking me first. That was the issue, and I was not pleased. One should inquire, ‘How do you feel about this? I am going public with this information; do you agree or accept?’ But today, I can say that it no longer matters; Priyanka (Chopra) is welcome to portray my character.”

Five years later, Sheela expresses that she has come to terms with the concept and has no objections to Priyanka depicting her in a film.
