Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor's film Loveyapa hit theaters on February 7, but it looks like viewers weren't too impressed with this fresh spin on love and relationships. The movie got a mix of reviews and didn't quite make a splash at the box office. In a chat with India Today, the film's writer, Sneha Desai, shared her thoughts on its lackluster performance and hinted that it could find a better audience when it eventually streams online.

The filmmaker's comment

In the interview, Sneha mentioned that box office figures don’t always capture the complete essence of a film's influence. She described "Loveyapa" as a fresh and unconventional approach to romance, aimed mainly at Gen-Z and millennials who really vibe with its humor, sarcasm, and contemporary views on love, relationships, and infidelity. Since it’s a unique kind of rom-com and a remake that strays from the usual Bollywood formula, it might take a little while for a broader audience to really resonate with it.

‘A lot of folks might have been feeling shy’

She added, "People tend to enjoy bigger-than-life stories in theaters, while they lean towards more low-key films on streaming platforms. Maybe that’s why some folks were hesitant to check out the movie in cinemas. But I think it could really take off once it hits digital. The best part is that everyone who has seen it has come away pleasantly surprised by both the film and the performances."

Loveyapa is the Hindi remake of Pradeep Ranganathan's Tamil film Love Today, directed by Advait Chandan. The story follows Gaurav (Junaid) and Baani (Khushi), whose romance gets complicated when Khushi’s dad, played by Ashutosh Rana, challenges them to swap phones to prove their love. So far, it has made ₹ 6.85 crore.
