The highly praised debut feature of Junaid Khan, Maharaj (2024), has paved the way for his forthcoming cinematic project, Loveyapa. This film is a remake of the Tamil blockbuster Love Today, featuring Khushi Kapoor in the leading female role. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Junaid elaborates on the transition from OTT platforms to traditional cinema just prior to the film's premiere.
Transition from OTT to theatrical release
Maharaj, Junaid's inaugural feature film, was launched on Netflix. Consequently, Loveyapa will mark his first theatrical release. Nevertheless, the actor believes that the change in distribution platforms has minimal to no effect.
He perceives no significant impact on himself regarding the matter. In his view, a film is simply a film, and he holds all of them in high esteem. Decisions concerning the film's distribution are matters he prefers to leave to those with expertise, trusting their judgment. Junaid's true enthusiasm lies in the craft of acting. Ideally, he would prefer to upload the film to YouTube for free access to all viewers, although he acknowledges that this is not a feasible option.
Expanding the audience reach
The actor expressed his desire for the film to reach the largest possible audience. When questioned about his preference for making the film available for free on YouTube, he reiterated his stance. He believes that the marketing and distribution experts should manage those aspects.
Nonetheless, the actor contends that artists are not the appropriate individuals to consult regarding the debate between OTT platforms and theatrical releases. He asserts that such inquiries should be directed towards distributors and producers, as artists remain unaffected by these decisions.
Loveyapa as a new interpretation of Love Today
Loveyapa serves as a contemporary adaptation of the well-known Tamil film Love Today. Junaid maintains that being a remake does not detract from the film's originality in any way.
To commence, love stories possess a timeless essence. In his view, the screenplay was exhilarating and appeared to promise an enjoyable experience. Furthermore, Junaid asserts that many individuals are unconcerned by the notion that there exists something akin to, "No, but this seems intriguing enough." He contends that the presence of alternative options is of little significance.
Advait Chandan is at the helm of directing Loveyapa, a film that stars Khushi Kapoor, Junaid, Ashutosh Rana, and Kiku Sharda in prominent roles. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on February 7.
