Adi Shankar, the Indian-American showrunner renowned for his work on Netflix’s Castlevania, has made a significant return to the anime realm with a fresh adaptation of the long-untouched classic Devil May Cry. Collaborating with esteemed producers Hideaki Itsuno and Seung Woo Lee, Shankar envisions this latest video game adaptation of the DMC universe as set in the “late ‘90s/early 2000s PS2 era…not…modern times.” This choice is unmistakably reflected in the music selected for the series opener.

On January 31 (IST), Netflix officially announced the release date for the anime revival of the beloved video game franchise, unveiling the opening credits. This project aims to bridge the gap between contemporary anime enthusiasts and long-time fans of Capcom’s action-adventure game series, as Shankar’s eagerly anticipated anime takes a nostalgic turn by featuring the iconic nu metal band Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’.”

Devil May Cry creator on the upcoming Netflix anime

Although initially announced in 2018, there was a notable lack of updates regarding the animated series until September 2023, when Netflix finally released the highly anticipated anime announcement video. The significant reveal in 2025 disclosed the premiere date for the Devil May Cry anime, with Shankar once again hinting at his vision for a multi-season storyline.

“In my DMC universe, each season will possess a distinct atmosphere to reflect the unique essence of each game,” he stated on X/Twitter. “This entails a different theme song and entirely new title design for every season.”

He elaborated, “Furthermore, my DMC Universe is situated in a late '90s/early 2000s PS2-inspired world. It does not take place in contemporary times but rather in my recollection of the world before and after 9/11. My musical selections are indicative of this period, featuring a blend of popular tracks from that era alongside iconic songs from the DMC franchise, reimagined by @powergloveaudio.”

The Indian-American visionary concluded with enthusiasm: “You are not ready for this soundtrack. Anime is not ready for this soundtrack. Jackpot, motherf***ers!”

Devil May Cry release date confirmed

A previously established anime series based on Devil May Cry, produced by studio MADHOUSE, debuted in 2007, exploring the life of Dante as a demon hunter. The forthcoming adaptation will feature American actor Johnny Yong Bosch, known for his roles as Yukio in Blue Exorcist and Ichigo in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, providing the voice for Dante. Adi Shankar has collaborated with animation studio Studio Mir, recognized for works such as The Legend of Korra, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and Lookism, for the anime's release in 2025.

This new iteration of Devil May Cry will present a remarkable tale of vengeance, as Dante embarks on a pivotal quest to avenge his mother's death by eliminating all demons.

According to Netflix’s TUDUM, the storyline unfolds: “Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”

The highly anticipated demon-hunting adventure is set to premiere on April 3, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.

Fan reactions (X) to Limp Bizkit's Devil May Cry takeover

  • I was not anticipating Limp Bizkit's involvement, but I can certainly envision a young Dante selecting this as a theme.
  • Adi Shankar, I now comprehend your artistic direction.
  • Until now, I had never considered how well Limp Bizkit and Devil May Cry could complement each other. However, I am now convinced, and my excitement has only increased! If your music selection reflects your intentions, it will undoubtedly resonate with my inner 2000s emo/punk rock enthusiast.
  • The inclusion of a Limp Bizkit theme song in the Devil May Cry anime is truly remarkable.
  • I experienced goosebumps upon hearing Limp Bizkit paired with a game that is over 20 years old, realizing that the song itself is also more than two decades old.
  • This almost feels surreal. You cannot take my favorite video game series and incorporate Limp Bizkit into it. It feels as though Adi Shankar has hacked my preferences, creating something specifically designed for me.
  • Limp Bizkit’s "Rolling" may very well represent the pinnacle of Devil May Cry, and I fear its impact.
  • The synergy between Limp Bizkit and DMC is surprisingly effective, and the animation for this opening sequence looks incredibly impressive. I am eagerly anticipating this show, especially with the subtle reference to DMC2.
  • I was genuinely taken aback when I discovered that "Rollin’" by Limp Bizkit is now an anime opening.
