Kate Cassidy, the girlfriend of Liam Payne, has shared her thoughts on the moment she received the news of the singer's passing, expressing that it still feels surreal to her that he is no longer present. The One Direction member tragically passed away at the age of 31 on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the time, he was in the country with Cassidy, who had returned to the United States before his untimely death. In an interview with The Sun, she remarked, “Love is inherently optimistic, and one always hopes for a positive outcome in the end. If I had known what was to come, I would have never left Argentina.” She added, “We had responsibilities, including our dog, and I never imagined that such a tragic event could occur. It was an unfortunate accident, and I never considered that he might pass away at a young age. However, we did lead our own separate lives, and this was not the first instance of us traveling apart. I simply never anticipated that things would unfold in this manner.” The news of Payne's death led to vigils worldwide, and he was recently honored during the In Memoriam segment at the Grammy Awards.

Cassidy says ‘it still doesn’t feel fully real for me’

Cassidy expressed, "It still feels surreal to me that he is no longer here. I am striving to be my best, yet my life has transformed so drastically. Liam occupies my thoughts every moment of every day. From the very first time I met him, I was convinced we were soulmates; he was the most humble, charming, and down-to-earth individual one could ever hope to encounter, truly one of the finest people I have ever known. The reality that he will not be by my side as I navigate through life, that I must face this without him, is incredibly challenging. You never anticipate the worst possible outcome." Reflecting on the moment she learned of Liam's passing, she remarked, "I feel fortunate that I did not discover the news through social media, as I cannot fathom how distressing that would have been. I was at home with our dog, scrolling through TikTok when one of Liam's friends called me. That moment is a blur; it feels as though my mind went blank. Initially, I could not accept it. I thought it was merely a rumor or something fabricated for attention. Then, an unsettling feeling washed over me. I questioned, 'Why would someone invent this? Is it true?' I felt as if I had completely shut down. When I finally confirmed the news, I was left in a state of numbness. I attempted to reach out to him and called nearly everyone I knew. Eventually, I connected with his family, and my mother booked the earliest flight to be with me. I recall pacing around the house—poor Nala, my dog, thought I wanted to play and kept jumping up at me. I did not sleep at all that night." She continued, "Liam was in such a positive mindset when I departed from Argentina. We were in a wonderful place, filled with love; he was so joyful and optimistic. It is hard for me to comprehend how things ended the way they did. It is truly astonishing how quickly life can take everything away from you; you never really know what tomorrow holds." Five individuals have been charged in Argentina in connection with the case.
