Veteran actress Lee Joo Shil has sadly passed away at the age of 80. Her agency, 1230culture, confirmed the news on February 2, stating she died earlier that morning. According to K-media outlet JoongAng Ilbo, the Squid Game Season 2 star had been fighting stomach cancer.
The beloved South Korean actress was still active in her career until recently. She had a remarkable journey in the performing arts that lasted for decades, showcasing her talent in films, K-dramas, and even theatre.

About three months ago, actress Lee Joo Shil's health took a turn for the worse, and after a hospital check-up, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer, according to her agency. The 80-year-old star had previously faced stage 3 breast cancer back in 1993, but she triumphed over that after more than ten years. Sadly, she passed away in February after undergoing treatment for three months.
In her earlier years, Lee Joo Shil managed to graduate from college while fighting cancer. She went on to earn a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010.
Who is Lee Joo Shil?
The veteran actress made her stage debut back in 1965. She really made a name for herself during the 70s and 80s, taking on iconic roles in plays like ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘Macbeth.’ Born in 1944, she also appeared in films such as Country Diaries and Train to Busan.
Her drama resume is impressive, featuring hits like Beauty and Mr Romantic (with Im Soo Hyang and Ji Hyun Woo), Tell Me That You Love Me (starring Shin Hyun Been and Jung Woo Sung), A Time Called You (with Ahn Hyo Seop and Jeon Yeo Been), Divorce Attorney Shin (featuring Cho Seung Woo), Happiness (with Park Hyung Sik and Han Hyo Joo), Juvenile Justice (starring Kim Hye Soo), The Good Bad Mother (with Ra Mi Ran and Lee Do Hyun), and The Uncanny Counter (featuring Jo Byeong Kyu). For her last role, Lee Joo Shil played the mother of Wi Ha Joon’s character in Squid Game Season 2.
Her funeral will take place at the Severance Hospital funeral hall in Sinchon, Seoul, on February 5.
