Korean superstar Lee Dong Wook expresses, "I have grown bolder and more adventurous in selecting my projects." Renowned for his captivating performances as the mysterious Grim Reaper in Goblin, the longing gumiho in Tale of the Nine-Tailed, and the lethal assassin in A Shop for Killers, he has established himself as a prominent figure not only in South Korea but also internationally.

A return with The Divorce Insurance

He is now making a comeback in the romantic comedy genre with the highly awaited The Divorce Insurance on Prime Video, where he portrays Noh Ki-jun, an insurance actuary who has gone through three marriages and divorces. This personal history inspires him to create a divorce insurance plan.

At the age of 43, Lee continues to be regarded as one of the most sought-after bachelors in the South Korean entertainment industry. He recently shared on a variety show that he has become quite content with his single status and feels too unmotivated to pursue dating. However, how did he prepare for a role that contrasts so significantly with his own life experiences?

“I don't think being married and divorced three times in real life would have helped me understand Noh Ki-jun any better. I just focused on the script because all the answers were there. I can’t reveal too much, but if you watch the show, you’ll relate to Noh Ki-jun and his unique characteristics. It all came naturally to me after reading the script,” he shares in an exclusive conversation with Hindustan Times over Zoom.

Something new to offer

While Lee's captivating appearance has long contributed to his allure, he has continually challenged the limits of his artistry, demonstrating his adaptability as a performer.

"I am in a constant state of reinvention, which may explain why my performances seem fresh each time. I strive diligently to introduce something novel," he states.

It has been 25 years since he made his acting debut in 1999. Following his rise to fame with My Girl in 2005, he has showcased both memorable and lesser-known performances in dramas such as Hotel King and The Recipe, as well as in films like Arang and The Beauty Inside.

Over the years, his selections have only grown more audacious.

"With each year that passes, I find myself caring less about my popularity or public perception of my projects. Instead, I listen to my instincts and pursue roles that captivate me—those that feel innovative and thrilling. This is why I believe I am becoming bolder in my choices," he reflects.

The Divorce Insurance will debut on Prime Video on March 31.
