The filmmaker is overwhelmed with the big news. Recently, in an interview, Kiran Rao expressed her thoughts on the significance of dubbing and subtitles in today’s era that have crossed the barriers in the entertainment industry despite the geographical differences.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao is garnering praise for her fine craft in Laapataa Ladies. The comedy-drama film that revolves around two young brides who are swapped during a train ride, is making waves on social media. The light-hearted story with a meaningful message won everyone's hearts. In a new interview, Rao was asked to share her views about the importance of subtitles and dubbing and how they expand the global reach of Indian cinema across the world. The 50-year-old director shared that subtitles and dubbing are very important as they travel around the world and traverse across cultures. She also revealed that Laapataa Ladies is also gearing up for its release in Japan.


“Yes, (it is) very important to have our films travel with good subtitles that actually can get the colloquial beauty of some of our dialogues, the humour in dialect. So, great subtitling really helps us travel to other cultures. Our film will be releasing in Japan in October. So, it just speaks to the fact that the content, if it is good, well subtitled and culturally marketed, the film can travel everywhere,” Rao told NDTV.

Kiran Rao’s comeback film

Laapataa Ladies marks as a comeback for Kiran Rao as she stepped in the shoes of a director after a hiatus of 13 years. Her last acclaimed film is the social drama Dhobi Ghat which was released in 2011. Laapataa Ladies features a trio of budding and promising newcomers, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava. It is jointly produced by Kiran and her ex-husband, Aamir Khan.
