Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies did not secure a place on the shortlist for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars 2025. The filmmakers have acknowledged their disappointment regarding this outcome, while also conveying their appreciation to the Academy members and the FFI jury for choosing the film as India's official submission for the Oscars 2025.

Laapataa Ladies' makers admit being disappointed

The producers of Laapataa Ladies expressed their sentiments, stating, "While Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) did not secure a place on the Academy Awards shortlist this year, we are understandably disappointed. However, we are profoundly thankful for the remarkable support and faith we have received during this journey. We, at Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Productions, wish to convey our appreciation to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film."

The communication further emphasized, “Being part of this esteemed process alongside some of the most exceptional films from around the globe is a significant honour. We extend our sincere gratitude to audiences worldwide who have shown their affection and support for our film. We congratulate the teams behind all 15 shortlisted films and wish them the utmost success in the forthcoming stages of the awards. For us, this marks not an end, but a progression. We remain dedicated to bringing forth more impactful narratives and sharing them with the world. Thank you for accompanying us on this journey.”

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande, Laapataa Ladies narrates the tale of two young newly-wed brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey to their husbands' homes. The film features performances by Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.

In response to Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies being excluded from the Oscars 2025 race, both fans and filmmaker Hansal Mehta, along with Grammy-winner Rickey Tej, criticized the Film Federation of India. Hansal pointedly remarked on the FFI's poor “strike rate and selection of films year after year.” Numerous social media users also voiced their dissatisfaction regarding Laapataa Ladies not making it to the Oscars 2025 shortlist, suggesting that Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light should have represented India as the official entry for the Oscars 2025.
