L2:Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is set to undergo more than 17 edits, according to multiple Malayalam media outlets. Reports from Manorama News indicate that the producers are eliminating specific scenes depicting riots and violence against women. Here is all the essential information regarding the latest developments surrounding Empuraan, which has drawn criticism from right-wing groups.
Empuraan undergoes ‘cuts’ after right-wing groups oppose
Shortly after the premiere of Empuraan on March 27, 2025, social media became polarized regarding the film's violent and riot scenes, with right-wing parties expressing significant disapproval of Prithviraj Sukumaran's work. As the situation escalated into a major controversy, the L2E production team has initiated measures to mitigate the backlash.

Seventeen modifications have been reported for the film, which was written by Murali Gopy. The ongoing revisions focus on scenes that portray a woman's assault and the riot sequences. Additionally, the name of the antagonist, Balraj, also known as Baba Bajrangi, will be altered. Abhimanyu Singh portrayed this villainous character.
According to a report by Manorama News, the version featuring these 'voluntary modifications' is currently under review by the Censor Board. The revised edition is set to be released in theaters next week, while the existing version will continue to be shown until then.
Right-wing parties have expressed strong objections to the film's representation of riot scenes related to Gujarat. The RSS-affiliated publication, Organiser, has also published an article accusing the writer and director. Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding how the film initially obtained clearance from the Censor Board.

Upon submission for certification before its release, the Central Board of Film Certification requested only two cuts, totaling 10 seconds. These edits pertained to depictions of violence against women and the National Flag.
Gokulam Gopalan on Empuraan row
Gokulam Gopalan, who recently joined the film as a producer, stated that he has requested Prithviraj to implement modifications following claims that the sequel to Lucifer offended the feelings of a particular audience segment.
