The details regarding the recensoring of L2: Empuraan, which has sparked significant controversy, have been released. A total of 24 edits have been applied to the film, featuring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. In addition to modifications made to violent sequences, the most notable alteration was the exclusion of Suresh Gopi, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, from the 'Thanks card.' Reports about the omission of Suresh Gopi's name surfaced shortly after the actor-turned-politician characterized the Empuraan controversy as merely 'business.'

Suresh Gopi dismisses Empuraan row, his name cut

Suresh Gopi, the prominent Malayalam actor, has addressed the ongoing controversy related to L2:Empuraan, which has encountered significant criticism from right-wing supporters. Nevertheless, the BJP leader opted to downplay the situation, stating that "it is all business."

"What controversy exists here? It is purely a business matter... Manipulating people's minds for profit," he remarked to the press.

Suresh Gopi’s name removed from the Thanks card

Shortly after Suresh Gopi's statement, information regarding the re-censoring of L2:Empuraan emerged online, revealing that the actor-politician's name had been omitted from the 'Thanks card.' The re-censoring details, which have been extensively circulated on social media, indicate that the initial item on the list is 'removed Thanks card (Sri. Suresh Gopi).'

Nevertheless, Mathrubhumi News reported that the BJP leader had asked the makers of L2E to exclude his name from the card.

Empuraan row

The much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, titled Empuraan and featuring Mohanlal, premiered in theaters on March 27, 2025, receiving a mix of reviews. However, the film quickly became embroiled in controversy as right-wing groups expressed strong disapproval of specific scenes. As the situation intensified, the filmmakers opted to implement 'voluntary cuts' to the movie.

The revised version is set to debut in theaters this week. Antony Perumbavoor, one of the film's producers, commented earlier in the day on the L2E controversy, emphasizing that the decision to modify the film was made collectively. While Mohanlal shared a post on Facebook regarding the matter, director Prithviraj and writer Murali Gopy have yet to publicly respond.
