Kunchacko Boban Questions Producers' Box Office Figures: ‘Neither Accurate Nor Transparent’

The Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) has recently published a report indicating that only one out of the 17 Malayalam films released in February generated satisfactory revenue. This film, titled Officer on Duty and featuring Kunchacko Boban, prompted the actor to express to OnManorama that the association's data was 'neither precise nor transparent.'

Kunchacko Boban challenges KFPA figures

Following the release of the report, filmmakers and actors have voiced their objections and questioned the reported figures. Kunchacko informed the publication that the KFPA's assertion that "Officer on Duty" was produced on a budget of ₹13 crore and earned ₹11 crore at the box office is inaccurate.

He stated, “The actual production cost of the film exceeds ₹13 crore. The producers did not merely recoup ₹11 crore; they have generated at least double that amount or more. The ₹11 crore cited by the association representatives likely pertains only to the share the producer received from theatres in Kerala. Even then, the true figure surpasses ₹11 crore. Their statistics lack both accuracy and transparency. If figures are to be presented, they must be exact.”

Kunchacko further mentioned that "Officer on Duty" has grossed approximately ₹30 crore in Kerala alone and that the film began to turn a profit after its opening weekend. When asked about the fairness of requesting actors to lower their fees, he replied, “If those producers who are complaining are indeed incurring losses, I am open to acting in their films without charge. They can retain all the revenue from the Kerala theatres. My only request is to receive the earnings from outside Kerala and from digital platforms such as OTT and satellite. However, they never consider these revenues when discussing their losses, do they?”

What did the KFPA say

KFPA Vice-President G. Suresh Kumar informed the media last week that among the 17 films released in February, only one achieved success: Officer on Duty. He noted that two films, Daveed and Bromance, are unlikely to incur losses, as they may offset their theatre revenue shortfall through the sale of OTT and other distribution rights.

The association reported that the combined budget for the films released in February was approximately ₹75.23 crore, while the total revenue from theatre collections amounted to merely ₹23.55 crore. In January, the industry faced a significant loss of ₹110 crore, with 28 films debuting that month.
