Kunchacko Boban Opens Up: "I've Always Strived to Be Worthy of This Applause"

Kunchacko Boban, a prominent actor in Malayalam cinema, has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. However, instilling fear is not typically associated with the roles he has portrayed. Remarkably, he manages to evoke such emotions within the first ten minutes of his latest blockbuster, Officer On Duty, which has been drawing large audiences since its release last week.

The actor discusses his portrayal of the complex character CI Harishankar in the film directed by Jithu Asharaf. He also shares his thoughts on the feedback he has received regarding his role and reflects on the implications of this success for his career.

With CI Harishankar in Officer On Duty, do you feel that you evoke a sense of fear in people’s minds, as opposed to how you really are?

In films of this nature, the climax sequences typically play a vital role in engaging the audience. However, in the case of Officer On Duty, the effectiveness of the initial scene was paramount; if it failed to resonate, the quality of the climax would have been irrelevant, as the character's mindset needed to connect with the viewer. This was a bold decision, and fortunately, the audience responded positively, aligning with our expectations. Thus, it can be said that a strong beginning facilitated a successful conclusion.

How thrilled are you about the feedback of the film? And judging from how happy you are, this also seems very important to you.

Certainly. One could draw a parallel between this and my debut film, Aniyathipraavu. I never anticipated it would achieve such significant success, nor did I expect the character of Sudhi to resonate so deeply with audiences. I experienced similar sentiments with Harishankar and Officer On Duty. In both instances, the level of acceptance from the audience has far exceeded our expectations. Therefore, this represents a pivotal moment in my career.

In the past few years with films like Nayattu, Ariyippu and Officer On Duty, you seem to relish being comfortable in the uncomfortable. In this film, particularly, you had to access dark corners of a character, who is still suffering from the trauma of his past.

I find a certain enjoyment in this challenging space. When one is passionate about their work, they are prepared to face any difficulties that may arise. In the initial stages of my career, I must admit that I lacked that inner drive. I still question whether I truly deserved the accolades and recognition I received during the early part of my journey. However, since my return after a hiatus, I have made it my mission to give my utmost effort to earn the support I have received from the audience. My goal has been to reciprocate their generosity with even more than they have offered me.

If you were to inquire about the reasons behind the profound impact of this character, there are numerous individuals and elements I would like to acknowledge. First and foremost is the scriptwriter, Shahi Kabir, who possessed a deep understanding of every facet of Harishankar’s life—both his professional and personal challenges. Although this marks Jithu Ashraf’s directorial debut, he brings with him a wealth of experience in the film industry, having worked as both an actor and a technician. He chose to bide his time, forgoing various opportunities to ensure that his first film would be exceptional. Additionally, I must recognize producer Martin Prakkat, composer Jakes Bejoy, editor Chaman Chakko, cinematographer Roby Raj Varghese, make-up artist Ronex Xavier, costume designer Sameera Saneesh, and my fellow actors. Each of their contributions played a significant role in shaping the final performance on screen.

Be it the editing pattern or the music, all of it helped in showing the different sides of Harishankar, especially when he is a terror to his colleagues or when he is emotionally vulnerable. This helped connect him to the audience. So, I credit each and everyone for helping me make this one of the best characters in my career so far.

The way the makers have constructed Harishankar’s journey was also unusual for a film of this genre in Malayalam, because initially he is feared by many and then they take the audience through his trauma before he is put in a place where he can redeem himself. At one point, for Harishankar to connect with the audience, he has to get their empathy, else it could have been a character that could have been more negative than grey. Did all of this make it even more challenging compared to the other roles you have played?

There may be scenes that some individuals perceive as politically incorrect. However, upon examining the current societal landscape, it becomes clear that Harishankar has merely reflected the desires of a significant portion of the populace. The film delves into the reasons behind such societal atrocities. It illustrates how, in the presence of gaps within the legal framework that allow criminals to evade justice, the film advocates for the type of punishment that the majority seeks. This aspect contributes to the film's overall success.

At one point, the narrative reveals that Harishankar is not solely a police officer but also a father, which carries substantial weight. This duality has prompted many parents, including my friends, to reach out to me after viewing the film, expressing their concerns for their children studying in distant locations and deciding to contact them. The film encapsulates the anxieties and tensions faced by contemporary parents. While the conclusion may not present the most suitable resolution, it is clear that the desire for a better outcome exists.

Examining Harishankar’s character development, it is evident that he is not a superhero but rather an ordinary individual whose circumstances compel him to undertake extraordinary actions. A single incident serves as the catalyst for his investigation. At one point, he even faints, highlighting his fallibility. He makes mistakes and is not infallible. When he is overwhelmed by emotions, it is his wife who steps in to make courageous and rational decisions.

How did you prepare for this character?

The character I portrayed was both emotionally and physically challenging, necessitating the use of various references. I consulted with several psychologists to gain insights into such individuals and integrated their recommendations into my performance. Many now regard this film as having some of the finest action choreography of my career. Achieving that level of visual impact on screen required extensive rehearsals. Even with thorough preparation, the environment on set—including interactions with co-stars, makeup, and the overall atmosphere—plays a crucial role in immersing oneself in the character.

You have been active at a time when ‘mass’ action movies were a rage in Malayalam cinema and during a time when rooted-to-reality films connected with the audience the best. Because you had mentioned action, do you subscribe to the view that for an actor to climb a rung, an action film has to succeed?

Maybe. But I have been fortunate to experience the peak in both these phases, and I take that as a blessing. I could sustain my image as a romantic hero for a long time and could experience both the highs and lows that came with it. Now with the action-hero image with this film, I believe the stunts here were grounded. It’s not like that he’s knocking down 30 people and walking in slow motion.

I like to be part of action choreography that is emotionally supported. That’s what will stay in people’s minds. I believe that the best action scene in Malayalam is in Kireedam’s climax because it has that emotional angle.

You have also experienced the ups and downs of success – and not just in your film career. But at this point in your career, how important is success?

The significance of audience appreciation cannot be overstated. Regardless of our efforts, the ultimate result hinges on how the audience perceives our work. Consider the example of Shahi Kabir, who has produced films that have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. However, he emphasized that the acceptance of the audience holds greater importance than any accolades. Thus, while success is indeed valuable, it is the recognition bestowed upon us by the public that truly counts.

You had also thanked your wife Priya in a warm message, saying this success is something that she too has wished for. It must have been a high.

I have spent 28 years in this industry, witnessing both its triumphs and challenges. However, experience alone is insufficient without sound judgment; merely having a lengthy career does not guarantee the ability to make wise decisions. It is essential to recognize and accept practical, logical, and correct advice from others. I value the supportive perspectives my wife, Priya, offers, and as an actor, her feedback has significantly contributed to the refinement and enhancement of my skills.
