Kunchacko Boban Explains Loyalty to Malayalam Cinema: 'Other Industries Envy Our Content'
14 days ago | 5 Views
Kunchacko Boban is riding high on the success of his latest movie, Officer on Duty, which became profitable within just three days. He believes this marks a significant moment in his career. Despite having appeared in over 100 films, the Malayalam actor, affectionately known as Chackochan, candidly admits that he often sees room for improvement when reflecting on his past roles. However, his portrayal of CI Harishankar in Officer on Duty seems to stand out, as he’s been receiving a lot of praise for it.
The journey of ongoing learning as an actor
Chackochan shares with Hindustan Times that there are certain roles, like Harishankar in OOD, where you feel you've given it your all, yet there's always a desire to improve and push your limits. "I'm always learning and refining my skills. I aim to take on various films or roles that might stretch me beyond my comfort zone, requiring extra effort and emotional and physical risks. I'm still in the process of mastering the craft, exploring different combinations, characters, and fresh ideas that come my way. I'm really excited to work on such thrilling projects and eager to support new creators," he explains.
Reasons other industries admire Malayalam cinema
Kunchacko Boban is a well-known figure in Malayalam cinema and has a strong fan base, but unlike many of his contemporaries, he hasn't ventured into the Telugu or Tamil film industries. When asked about this, he explains, “Right now, the Malayalam film industry is experiencing a golden era in terms of content. Other film industries are actually looking at us with envy because of the unique films we're producing, whether it's the quality, themes, or stories. Our films, while deeply rooted in local culture, are reaching audiences across India and even globally, thanks to their compelling content and the rise of OTT platforms that have diminished language barriers. The roles I'm being offered and the films being made in Malayalam are incredibly exciting. However, I'm open to exploring other languages, particularly Tamil, as I want to voice my own characters. If a captivating role or film comes my way in another language, I'm definitely willing to give it a shot. I'm just waiting for that opportunity.”
Understanding from our errors
The actor has delivered some outstanding performances in films such as How Old Are You?, Take Off, Traffic, Bougainvillea, Nizhal, Virus, 2018, Nna Thaan Case Kodu, Anjaam Pathiraa, Nayattu, and Ariyippu. Each of these movies showcased a different side of the actor, who is eager to move beyond the typical ‘chocolate boy’ persona. Over his 27-year career, he has experienced both highs and lows, and Chackochan believes that mistakes are opportunities for growth. When asked if he has any regrets, he responds honestly, “Basically, no regrets. I don’t dwell on the negative aspects of my life. Instead, I focus on finding the silver lining in my career. When I found myself stuck in repetitive roles, I took a break from acting to explore diverse characters. People often wonder why I didn’t make this change sooner, but I feel that the timing was just right. If you stumble, just get back up and keep going. Progress is key, even if it’s slow. I trust in God’s plan; I see myself as a tool in His hands and in the hands of talented creators in the film industry.”
Chackochan frequently emphasizes in interviews that he is eager to collaborate with new filmmakers, provided they offer him unique and challenging scripts. “I’m open to any character or film that can present me in an unexpected way, something beyond my imagination. I welcome all directors and writers, whether seasoned or new, to craft intriguing and exciting roles for me. I’m ready and waiting as an actor,” concludes Kunchacko Boban.
