Kunal Roy Kapur: No Need for Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani Sequel, Character Arcs Concluded

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani achieved significant box office success upon its theatrical release a decade ago in 2013. The film, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Kalki Koechlin, was also re-released in theaters last month. However, the prospect of a sequel appears unlikely, according to actor Kunal Roy Kapur, who portrayed Taran Khanna in the film, as he expressed in a recent interview with Bollywood Bubble.
What Kunal said
During the interview, the actor addressed the possibility of a sequel to the film, stating, "It is complete. It is already done, correct? The journeys of those characters have concluded. They are not really necessary anymore."
In the film, Kalki's character, Aditi, ultimately marries Taran after coming to terms with the fact that her feelings for Avinash were unreciprocated. When inquired about the likelihood of Aditi and Taran remaining together after all these years, Kunal remarked, "Considering the trajectory of the movie, they would not find themselves in a divorce court. They would certainly be a happily married couple. I cannot ascertain whether she would be content in her marriage with Taran, but he would likely be happy."
Ranbir on the chances of a sequel
Kunal may not envision the prospect of a sequel, yet Ranbir previously indicated that director Ayan Mukerji had conceived a compelling narrative for a continuation featuring the same characters. During a fan interaction in 2023, Ranbir remarked, “I believe Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani would lend itself well to a sequel... Ayan had crafted a very appealing story, as I recall, but then he embarked on the Brahmastra project. However, one should never dismiss the possibility. He might pursue it after a few years. I envision the story taking place ten years later, focusing on Bunny, Naina, Avi, and Aditi, and examining their lives at that point. It would be quite fascinating and rewarding to delve into those characters.”
