Kunal Kamra’s Witty Comeback to Backlash Over Eknath Shinde Joke
1 day ago | 5 Views
Comedian Kunal Kamra recently found himself at the center of controversy following a joke he made about Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. In response to the backlash, Kamra delivered a clever and audacious statement. His comment incited a group of Shiv Sena supporters to vandalize the Habitat Centre, the location of his performance. Nevertheless, the stand-up comedian, recognized for his incisive wit, addressed the incident with his characteristic mix of sarcasm and humor, crafting a response that was both defiant and entertaining.
Kamra began his statement by directly addressing the mob: "To the Mob That Decided That Habitat Should Not Stand: An entertainment venue is simply a platform, a space for various performances. Habitat, like any other venue, is not accountable for my comedy, nor does it possess any authority over my words or actions. No political party holds that power either. Attacking a venue due to a comedian's remarks is as irrational as overturning a truck full of tomatoes simply because you disliked the butter chicken served to you."
He then shifted his focus to the political figures who had issued threats against him, emphasizing that the right to freedom of speech should not be reserved solely for those in positions of power. He stated, "Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not intended solely for the adulation of the wealthy and influential, despite what today's media may suggest. Your inability to appreciate a joke at the expense of a prominent public figure does not alter the essence of my rights. As far as I am aware, it is not illegal to mock our leaders and the farce that is our political system."
Kamra also expressed his willingness to cooperate with authorities regarding any lawful actions but questioned whether justice would be applied equitably to those who resorted to violence. He humorously remarked, "Perhaps for my next venue, I will choose Elphinstone Bridge or any other structure in Mumbai that is in urgent need of demolition."
Kamra also ridiculed those who attempted to intimidate him by leaking his phone number and incessantly calling him, remarking, “I trust you have come to realize that all unknown calls are directed to my voicemail, where you will be subjected to the very song you despise.”
Moreover, he did not shy away from addressing the media and the current state of press freedom in India. "To the media diligently covering this spectacle: Keep in mind that press freedom in India is ranked 159," Kamra asserted. He concluded his remarks with a resolute statement: "I will not apologize. What I expressed is precisely what Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st Deputy CM) stated regarding Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I do not fear this mob, and I will not retreat to my bed, waiting for this to pass."
Kunal Kamra’s remarks have elicited both support and backlash, yet it is evident that he remains steadfast in his right to voice his opinions. His determination to uphold his comedic style and his incisive commentary on the situation illustrate his unwavering stance against the rising tide of cancel culture and political intolerance.
