Actor Kubbra Sait was recently inquired about the resilience she must have possessed to navigate the experience of an abortion and challenge societal expectations. In a conversation with Bollywood Bubble, she clarified that, during that time, she did not perceive her actions as a display of strength, but rather felt an inability to discuss her situation with anyone.
Kubbra Sait on getting an abortion
When the host praised Kubbra for her ability to make her own choices, the actress replied, “I don’t believe I was strong at all during my abortion. I felt too weak to move forward. I lacked the courage to say that if we didn’t proceed with this, we would have to live with the consequences. At that moment, I felt incredibly weak... I felt empty. I believed I was not worthy at all.”
She acknowledged that it was only much later that she recognized the strength in her decision, as it allowed her to break free from conventional norms. Kubbra also disclosed that she kept this experience to herself, not confiding in her friends or even the director of the travel show she was hosting at the time.
“Nobody knew about it. I went through the abortion alone. I recall meeting a friend two or three weeks later, and she was discussing how I wasn’t listening. It was then that I opened up, and that’s when the reality hit me. I began to cry because I realized I hadn’t shared this with anyone,” she recounted.
Kubbra further mentioned that five or six years later, while filming her show, she experienced severe discomfort and irritability due to heavy bleeding, yet she still refrained from discussing her struggles with those around her. It was only when she wrote about it in her book, Open Book: Not Quite a Memoir (2022), that she understood the importance of sharing her story and being compassionate towards the choices she had made in her life.
Recent work
Kubbra was most recently spotted in Deva, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde in prominent roles. She is set to appear soon in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Following her rise to prominence with the 2018 Netflix series Sacred Games, Kubbra has also participated in productions such as Waqalat From Home, Farzi, The Trial, and Shehar Lakhot.
