Shortly after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a closure report regarding the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput's death, his friend and fellow actor Krissann Barretto stated that she jeopardized both her life and career by speaking out about his death five years prior.
Krissann Barretto on speaking up about Sushant Singh Rajput
Sushant's passing was a profound shock to the entertainment sector. The actor had established himself as a prominent figure on television before successfully transitioning to film in 2012. In the wake of his death, while many of Sushant's friends expressed their sorrow and shared tributes, some faced accusations of exploiting the situation for personal gain.
In a discussion on Shardul Pandit’s podcast, Uncensored, Krissann Barretto remarked, “In India, being an actor means you cannot openly grieve. When a friend dies, people often think you are seeking attention through your posts. Because you are in the public eye, they perceive your emotions as a performance. There is little space for authentic feelings. This is why many chose to remain silent.”
Krissann further explained that when she voiced her thoughts on the situation and the ongoing investigation, she was advised against speaking out and even faced professional repercussions. “There are risks involved. I jeopardized my career and my safety… my parents were upset with me for my comments. No one is so naive as to endanger their life for mere attention. People fail to understand how many opportunities vanish when you take a stand like this. I experienced it firsthand. I was denied job opportunities, lost a great deal, and gained nothing in return. I did it for my friend, not for recognition. I am indifferent to what I might lose. Even my friends urged me to stop, calling me to say, ‘Don’t speak out.’ But I could not remain silent,” she concluded.
Sushant Singh Rajput's death and its fallout
Sushant passed away by suicide at his residence in Mumbai in June 2020, at the age of 34. His death prompted an investigation that engaged several central agencies, with his girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, initially regarded as a suspect. Subsequently, Rhea was exonerated in the case. The CBI's closure report also cleared both Rhea and her brother Showik, who had been arrested and incarcerated during the investigation. Numerous celebrities have urged agencies and media outlets to issue apologies to Rhea for the distress she experienced.
