
Kolkata Comic Con Wraps Up with a Bang: A Celebration of Pop Culture with a Bengali Twist

The first-ever Comic Con India in Kolkata was an epic pop culture bash, attracting thousands of comic fans for two thrilling days. It's kind of funny how this vibrant city, known for its artsy vibe, hosted the national pop culture expo a bit late.
Taking place at Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan, the event featured a ton of both international and Indian comic creators, graphic artists, and big names from the industry, all there to show off their amazing work.

There were about 34 stalls showcasing brands like Alpha Comics, Starmark Publishers, Amar Chitra Katha, The Jungle Heroes, Penguin Random House, Holy Cow Entertainment, Induverse Endwars, Planet Superheroes, and Fatcat Collectibles, giving fans the opportunity to check out and buy a variety of merchandise, books, and graphic novels.We’re super excited to host Comic Con India in Kolkata for the very first time! This city has always been a hub for art, literature, and storytelling, making it the ideal spot for our next big pop culture event,” said Jatin Varma, Founder of Comic Con India, in an interview with PTI.
Fans got to enjoy some exclusive collectibles, including a special superfan box that had a Marvel Dr. Doom Bust, a Deadpool and Wolverine T-shirt, and some cool keychains.
Bill Golliher, the internationally renowned artist behind Archie Comics, visited Kolkata for the first time and was truly touched by the warm reception from local comic fans. “It’s such a loving city! People are so enthusiastic about comics and familiar with my work. I’ve been to India before, but this is my first time in Kolkata, and I arrived here on Thursday. I definitely plan to come back,” he said while signing comic strips and taking selfies with fans.

A Spider-Man in traditional attire, a Bengali twist on Deadpool called ‘Bong-Pool,’ and an Iron Man rocking a dhoti really captured everyone’s attention with their unique blend of Marvel and Bengali culture.
When it comes to comic culture in Bengal, Savio Mascarenhas, the mind behind the beloved Amar Chitra Katha character Sambhu, shared, “Kolkata and Bengal have always had a lively, open-minded, and eager audience for comics, and the first gathering proved just that.”
