Kirti Kulhari has expressed her feelings of being 'sidelined' during the promotional activities for her film Pink, noting that Taapsee Pannu emerged as 'the Pink girl.' The actress revealed that this situation led her to experience a significant emotional breakdown.
In a discussion with Fever FM, Kirti reflected on the 2016 film directed by Shoojit Sircar, which featured Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee, Andrea Tariang, and Angad Bedi. She stated, “When Pink was released, I never considered the hierarchy of status within the industry. I viewed it as a narrative centred around three women. My perspective was rooted in the belief that ‘We are all actors. We are all in this together.’ However, Pink made me acutely aware of the ‘big star-small star’ dynamic. The environment around me contributed to this feeling.”
Kirti recounted her initial surprise upon viewing the trailer, which prominently featured only Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee. Although Shoojit reassured her that the film would present a different narrative, the situation shifted after its release. “I noticed that the trailer predominantly showcased Taapsee and Mr. Bachchan. This was a significant shock for me, as I was aware of my contributions to the film. Shoojit advised me not to worry and to let the film speak for itself. I typically do not engage in public relations; I trust that my work will eventually be recognized. However, during the promotional phase, the PR efforts were heavily focused on Taapsee, who was positioned just after Mr. Bachchan in the film's hierarchy. Ultimately, it became her film, and she was branded as the Pink girl, which unfolded right before my eyes. This was my first major realization, and I found it difficult to comprehend.”
When questioned about the impact on her relationship with Taapsee, Kirti noted that Taapsee remained cordial and seemingly unaware of the situation, while she herself took the 'PR game' somewhat personally.
