Kiran Raos comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies continues to attract attention a year after its release. The film has been chosen as India's official submission for the 2025 Oscars. However, it has recently faced allegations of plagiarizing a 2019 Arabic film titled Burqa City. A clip from Burqa City has gained significant traction on social media, leading many internet users to question the originality of Kiran Rao's Bollywood production.

Laapataa Ladies is copied from Arabic short film Burqa City?

A recent video featuring the Arabic short film Burqa City has gained significant attention on social media, sparking discussions about the potential similarities between Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies and the short film. The viral footage depicts the storyline of the Arabic film, which follows a newly married man in his quest to find his wife after mistakenly encountering another woman dressed in a burqa. In contrast, Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two newlywed brides, Phool and Jaya, who are inadvertently exchanged during a train trip.

Netizens have accused Laaptaa Ladies of plagiarism. One user remarked, "Nothing produced by Bollywood appears to be an original creation. Everything seems to be shamelessly copied from elsewhere and falsely presented as original work."

Another user commented, "Plagiarism in India is not a new phenomenon." A third user expressed, "I thought it was an original film, but it turns out otherwise. At least this movie features a beautiful song, 'Sajni re' by Arijit."

More about Laapataa Ladies

The OTTplay review of Laapataa Ladies states, "Kiran Rao has crafted a film that seeks to engage with you rather than overwhelm you with its interpretation of humanity. Embrace the experience, allow the humor to bring you joy, appreciate the meaningful dialogue, and find comfort in the triumphant conclusion that inspires personal growth."

Set in 2001 in the imaginary state of Nirmal Pradesh, the narrative follows a farmer named Deepak as he returns to his village with his new wife, Phool Kumari. During a bustling train ride, Deepak inadvertently disembarks with another bride, Jaya, leaving Phool with a different groom, Pradeep, due to the brides' identical attire and veils. The film delves into themes of financial autonomy, female desire, self-exploration, and the questioning of patriarchal structures.

Several celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and others, praised the movie.

Produced by Aamir Khan, Laapataa Ladies is directed by Kiran Rao. The cast of the movie includes Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha Ranta. The movie was released on the big screen on March 1 and is currently streaming on Netflix.
