Kiran Rao's directorial feature, Laapataa Ladies, may not have received an Oscar nomination, yet it has achieved a nomination for the Japan Academy Film Prize. The film, which premiered in Japanese theatres last October, was well-received by audiences and successfully completed a 100-day run at the box office. It is now nominated in the esteemed Best International Film category for the 2024 Japan Academy Film Prize.

Laapataa Ladies secures nomination for Japan Academy Film Prize

Laapataa Ladies has received a nomination in the same category as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things, Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest, and Alex Garland's Civil War. The announcement of the winner is scheduled for March 14, during the Japan Academy Film Prize ceremony.

About Laapataa Ladies

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande, Laapataa Ladies narrates the tale of two young brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey to their husbands' residences. The cast includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.

Laapataa Ladies did not secure a place on the shortlist for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars 2025. In a statement, the producers expressed, "Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) has not made it to the Academy Awards shortlist this year, and while we are disappointed, we are also profoundly thankful for the remarkable support and faith we have received throughout this journey. We at Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Productions wish to extend our appreciation to the Academy members and the FFI jury for considering our film."

The film premiered in Indian theatres last March, receiving favourable reviews, and is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
