During her remarks at the 7th edition of the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC), organized by the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) on Friday, the director of Laapataa Ladies observed that the distinction between OTT content and traditional film content has diminished significantly. "Currently, much of what is considered successful or popular on OTT platforms in India closely resembles what we typically see in films. The anticipated potential for expansive world-building and innovative storytelling may not have been realized, partly due to what seems to be a bubble burst," she stated.
Kiran reflected on the early days of OTT in India, which began less than a decade ago, highlighting a time of creative freedom that has since been overshadowed by other influences. She remarked, "OTT was like a golden egg; it offered limitless possibilities for creativity, but it had to reach a point of equilibrium. There remains immense potential and numerous stories waiting to be told, yet I am uncertain about the number of projects being commissioned and the economic viability of such endeavors. Like many things, there was a golden age, but I am unsure of its future direction. While we still witness exceptional writing on OTT in India, there is much more work to be accomplished."
In a discussion with moderator and writer Mitesh Shah, recognized for his work on Tumbbad, Rao was asked about her plans for streaming projects. She responded, "Nothing has been officially approved yet. I have several series concepts, including a mini-series, but I am uncertain about the path forward. I often feel inclined to transform the ideas I developed for my series into films!"
