Kiran Rao kicked off her directing career with Dhobi Ghat, featuring Aamir Khan as the main star. Recently, she shared that she kind of "tortured" Aamir a little while filming, which led him to ask her to treat him like any other actor on set.
Kiran Rao reflects on the past
In a chat with Filmfare, Kiran reminisced about directing her first film, Dhobi Ghat, which starred Aamir in the lead role and was produced by her ex-husband.
When asked about the experience of directing Aamir, she said, “He’s fantastic in Dhobi Ghat. He’s wonderful in my film. Honestly, he’s the best. It wasn’t nerve-wracking to direct him, but I did give him a hard time. If he suggested something, I’d be like, ‘no, no, no’ and snap at him.”
Kiran also shared the struggles she faced during the film's production, admitting she felt a lot of pressure due to the tight budget.
She explained, “It was my first film, and I was freaking out. We were working with a super small budget, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to achieve my vision. I had to be patient with everyone else on set since I couldn’t lose my cool with them, and I had to act like I knew what I was doing. But with Aamir, I felt I could let loose a bit because he was my husband.”
Kiran remembered that Aamir eventually insisted she treat him like any other actor. She mentioned that he told her to take his suggestions, “stay calm, and explain things to him nicely.”
Dhobi Ghat Overview
Kiran stepped into the director's chair for the first time with Dhobi Ghat back in 2010, and after a 14-year break, she made her return with Laapataa Ladies. This film tells the story of four individuals from diverse backgrounds whose lives cross paths, leaving a significant mark on each of them.
Set against the backdrop of Mumbai's monsoon season, the movie follows the interconnected lives of Aamir Khan (playing Arun), Monica Dogra (the NRI girl Shai), and Prateik Babbar (the washerboy Munna).
Kiran's debut film was even included in the BAFTA longlist for Film Not in the English Language in 2012, though it didn’t make it to the final five for international awards. Aamir and Kiran ended their marriage in 2021, but he recently produced her film Laapataa Ladies.
