Haneef Adeni's Malayalam movie Marco, featuring Unni Mukundan as the lead, is definitely one of the most divisive films to hit Indian screens. Recently, Telugu actor Kiran Abbavaram chatted with Galatta Telugu about how films affect viewers and mentioned that he couldn't get through Marco.

Kiran Abbavaram stepped out of Marco

Kiran was asked if he had seen Marco before sharing his thoughts on how films affect audiences. He mentioned that he did catch the movie in theaters, but he went with his pregnant wife, actress Rahasya Gorak, and they both found it hard to get through.

He explained, “I did watch Marco, but I didn’t finish it. I left during the second half because the violence was a bit too much for me. I went with my wife, who was pregnant, so we just couldn’t handle it and decided to leave. She wasn’t comfortable with it either.” Kiran admitted he didn’t even stick around for the intense scenes that happen before the climax, leaving well before that point.

When discussing the recent backlash against Marco and Pushpa 2: The Rule for their potential influence on viewers, Kiran acknowledged the need to be mindful of the stories we tell on screen. “Movies do have an impact. We carry what we see with us for at least a few days. Not everyone thinks the same way; some people watch films just for entertainment, while others take something deeper from it. I might not feel affected by it now, but back in my late teens or early twenties, I definitely was,” Kiran shared.

The backlash against Marco

Recently, Marco was denied satellite rights after the CBFC rejected the producers' request to change its A certificate for theatrical release to a UA rating. T Nadeem Thufali, the regional officer of CBFI, informed PTI that the committee has officially recommended to the Centre that the film should not be allowed to stream on OTT platforms. Director VC Abhilash also criticized the film on Facebook, labeling it a ‘dark chapter in Indian cinema.’

Marco was promoted as the most violent film ever made in India. The filmmakers included disclaimers to alert viewers about the level of violence in the movie. One disclaimer stated, “The film features violent scenes with children, but all blood and injuries were created using prosthetic and CGI effects.” Another mentioned, “The scenes with animals (dogs, pigeons) were achieved using computer graphics (VFX) and dummies.”
