As discussions continue to emerge regarding what appears to be credible evidence of his inappropriate behaviour towards actresses who were minors at the time, Hallyu fans have frequently raised the issue of potential criminal charges related to sexual offences involving a minor.

HoverLab has claimed that Kim Soo Hyun began a relationship with Kim Sae Ron in 2015 when he was 27 and she was 15. Initially, the actor's agency, Gold Medalist, strongly refuted these allegations. However, following the release of previously unseen photographs of the two actors by a YouTube channel, the agency was compelled to acknowledge their relationship, while asserting that both individuals were adults when their romance developed.

Kim Soo Hyun's agency revises official statement

As reported by the South Korean agency, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron were in a relationship from the summer of 2019 until the fall of 2020, following Kim Sae Ron's transition to adulthood. Despite the Gold Medalist's strong denial of any past relationship between The Producers actor and Kim Sae Ron when she was underage, the controversial discussions surrounding these allegations have already significantly impacted Kim Soo Hyun's previously unassailable reputation.

Legal expert weighs in on Kim Soo Hyun's scandal

In response to the escalating scandal, a legal expert recently assessed the likelihood of the Queen of Tears actor facing legal repercussions. On March 14, KST, an attorney featured on YTN’s ‘News Square 2 PM’ clarified, “The legislation concerning sexual offences against minors was amended in May 2020. Under these amendments, if an adult engages in physical intimacy or sexual relations with a minor under the age of 16, it may be classified as statutory rape or molestation, irrespective of consent.”

As reported by AllKpop, the lawyer further explained, “Before the 2020 amendment, the law applied only to minors under the age of 13. Therefore, in 2015, when Kim Sae Ron was 15 years old, the previous legislation was still in force. Since the earlier laws only pertained to minors under 13, merely being in a relationship at that time would not constitute sufficient grounds for legal action.”

Elaborating on the intricate circumstances, the attorney stated, “Given that she was 15 at the time, for Kim Soo Hyun to be legally prosecuted for a sexual offence involving a minor, there must be evidence of sexual contact or relations. Based on the information available thus far, it appears challenging to initiate criminal charges against him for a sexual offence involving a minor.”
