If everything had gone according to plan, Kiccha Sudeep's movie Max would have hit theaters in January 2024. Filming started in July 2023, and since it's a story that unfolds over a single night, it should have been finished pretty quickly. However, there were some setbacks due to floods in Chennai, and then the production faced some unavoidable issues, along with challenges in coordinating the schedules of the cast involved in the film.

Max was all set to hit the screens in August 2024, but for some reason only the production team knows, they chose to push the release to Christmas. This means it’ll be two and a half years since Sudeep last appeared on screen, not counting his brief cameos.

Sudeep explains why he doesn't keep backup stories.

The Kannada superstar has always taken a one film at a time approach, but after 28 years in the industry and only being on his 46th film, he realizes it’s time to speed things up. “In the next 18 months, I’m aiming for at least 2 releases. I’ve approved the scripts and I’m hoping everything goes as planned. Honestly, I need to keep busy; otherwise, what’s the point of just sitting at home?” he shared in a recent chat with the media.

Right now, his main focus is on Billa Ranga Baasha, which is his second project with director Anup Bhandari after Vikrant Rona. There’s another film in the works that he’s keeping under wraps for now, but it should start shooting around the same time. Sudeep mentioned that he’s given the green light to at least 3 stories, so he’s definitely not short on options..

Why does he take such long breaks between his films? There have been talks about potential collaborations that never happened. “What excites you today might not excite you tomorrow. I like to focus on one film at a time and see what types of movies are resonating with audiences. Some stories that seemed good a few years back might feel outdated by the time you’re ready to work on them. Plus, another filmmaker might have already tackled a similar theme,” Sudeep shares.

He also mentions that with big investments on the line, he can't afford to gamble on uncertain topics. Instead of keeping a stash of stories to choose from, Sudeep prefers to wrap up one project before diving into a new one. If he likes the new idea, he’ll jump right into development and production. That’s just how he rolls.
