The Princess of Wales is set to host her annual Christmas carol service as she gradually resumes her public engagements following her cancer treatment. Kate will lead the Together at Christmas service at Westminster Abbey, which this year focuses on the themes of love and empathy, honouring those who have provided support to others. She has penned a letter for the 1,600 attendees at the Abbey, including members of the royal family, conveying that “Love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times.” This message, included with the order of service featuring a cover illustration by artist Charlie Mackesy, will express: “This Carol Service is a heartfelt celebration of each of you, reminding us that at Christmas and throughout the year, we must all shine for one another. In both joyful and sorrowful moments, we are each other’s light.” The princess is anticipated to be accompanied by her family, including her husband William and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. While the King and Queen did not attend the 2023 carol service, they have participated in previous years. Over the past year, Kate has resumed her public duties after her cancer treatment, while Charles continues to receive care from cancer specialists.
The service aims to offer a moment of reflection on the significance of loved ones, particularly during challenging times. Performances will feature singers Gregory Porter and Paloma Faith, and Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, will light a candle alongside Lindsey Burrow, the wife of former Rugby League star Rob Burrow, who passed away in June after a well-publicized battle with motor neurone disease. Readings related to the themes of love and empathy will be delivered by the Prince of Wales and various celebrities, including actors Richard E Grant, Michelle Dockery from Downton Abbey, Oscar-nominated Sophie Okonedo for her role in Hotel Rwanda, and Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty. All 1,600 guests have been recognized for their support of others.
