Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj is presently looking forward to the release of his movie Retro featuring Suriya in the main role, and he was also responsible for the one-liner of the plot for the 2025 Telugu film Game Changer, directed by S Shankar. However, the Ram Charan-starring film did not perform successfully at the box office and received mixed reviews from viewers. Prior to the release of Retro, Karthik Subbaraj discussed the reasons behind the film's poor performance. Here is his perspective.

Karthik Subbaraj on Ram Charan-Shankar's Game Changer failure

Karthik Subbaraj possesses a unique voice. His movies can either succeed or fail at the box office, but they offer a distinctive narrative. The director, known for Pizza, provided the tagline for the 2025 Telugu film Game Changer featuring Ram Charan in the main role. Directed by S Shankar, the film debuted in theatres during Sankranthi this year, but did not achieve commercial success. Shankar faced criticism for delivering an unsatisfactory film.

In a recent conversation during the Retro promotion event, Karthik Subbaraj discussed Game Changer. “What I provided is a brief summary of the narrative. It centers around a down-to-earth IAS officer. When I presented the brief to Shankar sir, I was thrilled to witness his interpretation. Subsequently, numerous writers joined the project and both the narrative and screenplay underwent significant changes. It is impossible to determine if a film will resonate with the audience, and that film did not,” he stated.

Karthik Subbaraj films on OTT

Karthik Subbaraj’s first film was the horror thriller Pizza, featuring Vijay Sethupathi, Remya Nambeesan, Bobby Simha, and others. He also directed his idol and actor Rajinikanth in Petta. Additionally, there is Mercury, which is a horror thriller film without dialogues and includes Prabhu Deva, Sananth, and Remya Nambeesan. The story revolves around a group of friends who are haunted by a ghost that was previously a victim of mercury poisoning. All of these films can be found on OTTplay Premium.
