Karla Sofia Gascon, the principal actress in Emilia Perez, has made history by becoming the first transgender actress to receive an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category. The film has garnered numerous accolades in recent months; however, it has encountered an extraordinary challenge prior to several award ceremonies due to the lead actress's derogatory remarks regarding various marginalized communities.

Emilia Perez awards run in jeopardy

Following the viral spread of her previous tweets, the actress chose to deactivate her X account. She subsequently participated in a one-hour interview with CNN en Español, during which she became emotional and discussed her contentious social media past. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, this media engagement was conducted by Karla independently, without any collaboration with Netflix, which holds the distribution rights for Emilia Pérez.

The report further indicated that the actress will not be present at the Critics Choice Awards or any other award ceremonies scheduled to occur in Los Angeles. The Critics Choice Awards are set for February 7, where the film has received ten nominations, including one for Karla. Additionally, the Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards will take place the following day, both of which have recognized Emilia Pérez in their respective categories.

More details

Karla has been excluded from all promotional materials related to the awards campaign. The focus has now transitioned to her co-star, Zoe Saldana, who is currently a leading contender for the Best Supporting Actress award.

In the film, Karla portrays Emilia, a notorious drug cartel leader who enlists the assistance of Zoe Saldana’s character, Rita, a lawyer, to orchestrate her own death and pursue gender-affirming surgery. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year, where it earned Karla the Best Actress award, which she shared with her co-stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Zoe.
