Kareena Kapoor on India's Conservative Approach to Sex Scenes
18 days ago | 5 Views
Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor has only done a few sex scenes throughout her 25-year career. In a recent chat with Hollywood actress Gillian Anderson for Dirty Magazine, she opened up about why she made that choice and shared her thoughts on how sex scenes are viewed differently in the West compared to India.
Kareena Kapoor talks about her choice to avoid sex scenes in movies
When asked why she has largely refrained from doing sex scenes in films, Kareena said, "I personally feel like it's not important to take a story forward. It's not something that I feel is required in the narrative to show that. I know that I might not be comfortable doing that on screen. I never have done it. It's just the way we look at the whole idea. We don't look at sexuality or sex as a human experience."
Kareena believes that India isn't as accepting of sex scenes as Western countries are
She went on to discuss the differences in how sex scenes are perceived in India compared to the West, stating, "We really need to start acknowledging and respecting that more before we show it on screen. That's my perspective. From where I stand, we’re not as open as you all are, where the narrative is out there for everyone to experience so freely. While female desire is openly discussed in the West, it’s always been more straightforward there."
Kareena took on the role of a sex worker in her 2003 film Chameli. During the same chat, she shared how that role helped her discover her own confidence and sensuality at a young age. She mentioned that it encouraged her to be bold and made her eager to take on darker, more challenging roles even after 25 years in the business.
Next up, Kareena will star in a film directed by Meghna Gulzar, which is yet to be titled. For those who don’t know, Meghna is recognized for creating films based on real-life events and stories. Her last four projects have all been inspired by true incidents—Talvar with Irrfan Khan, Raazi featuring Alia Bhatt, Chhapaak starring Deepika Padukone, and Sam Bahadur with Vicky Kaushal.
