Karan Johar, the well-known filmmaker and head of Dharma Productions, recently shared his enthusiasm about the company's entry into Punjabi cinema during the trailer launch of Akaal in Mumbai. Directed by Gippy Grewal, this film represents Dharma Productions' inaugural Punjabi project, marking a significant achievement for the studio. At the event, Johar passionately discussed his partnership with Gippy Grewal, emphasizing how the director's involvement was crucial to the project.
In his address, Karan Johar expressed deep admiration for Gippy Grewal's skills, referring to him as an "absolute force" in the Punjabi film scene. Johar remarked, "This is Dharma Productions' first Punjabi film... I couldn't have picked a better, stronger, and more incredible collaborator than Gippy Grewal. What an absolute force!" He went on to say that just hearing Gippy Grewal's name made the choice to produce the film a straightforward one for him.
Thanks to Gippy Grewal, diving into Punjabi films felt like the perfect move. Just the thought of Gippy's name being linked to this project was enough for me. If we’re stepping into Punjabi cinema—and at Dharma Productions, we’re eager to create content beyond Hindi—this is our first shot at it. There couldn’t be a better way to kick things off.
Johar reminisced about the past, noting how Punjabi used to be the go-to language on film sets: "There was a time when everything in the industry was in Punjabi. Film sets buzzed with Punjabi chatter. The leading men were Punjabi, the directors were Punjabi, and the leading ladies often came from the South. That was the norm. I understand Punjabi, so I take pride in that. It’s amazing to see how vibrant and fresh this cinema has become in our country. It’s truly impressive to witness the growth of this emerging film scene, and now we’re experiencing cinema at this level."
Reflecting on the evolution of cinema, Johar likened his excitement for this new project to the enthusiasm he observed in director S.S. Rajamouli during their collaboration.
In discussing the hit film Baahubali, he reflected on how being involved in the early days of pan-Indian cinema influenced him. He mentioned experiencing a similar vibe when he met Gippy Grewal: "The way Baahubali was showcased, the intensity I saw in Rajamouli’s eyes—everything was on the line. I felt that same energy when I met Gippy; it’s that same level of passion. I’m truly honored to be part of that enthusiasm." The film, titled 'Akaal The Unconquered,' is set to release in theaters on April 10, 2025.
