Karan Johar: 'Every Day Is a Battle in the Entertainment Industry'

At the launch of the Akaal trailer in Mumbai, Karan Johar, the well-known filmmaker and producer, opened up about the hurdles he encounters in the entertainment world and how he connects with the character of Akaal Singh in the film. Directed by Gippy Grewal, Akaal is the first project from Dharma Productions in Punjabi cinema. Johar discussed the fierce competition in the industry and how social media has heightened the struggle for creative professionals.

Karan Johar kicked things off by sharing his thoughts on the entertainment industry feeling like a never-ending fight: "A character like Akaal Singh represents the unconquered. For us creative folks, every day feels like a battle. Not a single day goes by when I don’t feel like I’m in a war zone. And with social media, we’re up against a massive troll army every day. Sometimes, it feels like I’m all alone, facing this army. I can relate to Akaal Singh on social media."

He went on to stress that the fight is ongoing and that achieving success is a continuous struggle. He likened his journey to that of Akaal Singh, the film's main character: "I don’t think we are unconquered; we have a long way to go. Each day presents new challenges in the entertainment industry. I never wake up feeling like I’ve won everything. There’s always more to accomplish. This is a lesson I learned from my father, who always said that failure is the closest companion of success, and the two are intertwined."

Johar elaborated on his belief that both success and failure are temporary experiences, emphasizing the importance of not allowing either to define who you are. He stated, "The reality is that to truly accomplish anything in this industry, you need to embrace both success and failure. If you achieve success, failure will eventually follow, and if you encounter failure, success will come around too. Neither should be taken too seriously; that’s what helps keep your mind at ease."

He also reflected on how some individuals change after tasting success, stressing the need to remain humble: "When I notice some people going a bit overboard after finding success, I remind myself that they don’t understand what’s ahead. Likewise, don’t let failure weigh you down because it’s just a momentary state, not your whole existence."

This insightful take on the industry's highs and lows showcases Johar’s resilience and commitment to moving forward despite challenges. His remarks struck a chord during the trailer launch of Akaal, a film that represents a new venture for Dharma Productions as it steps into Punjabi cinema for the first time. Directed by Gippy Grewal, Akaal is set to premiere in theaters on April 10, 2025.
